Amaryllis In Bloom
The amaryllis flowers have started opening up.
A few of our outdoor amaryllis flowers have opened up in bloom over the last couple of days. It's always such a joy to walk out to the plants each morning and see what has changed over night. This amyrillis bulb has put out awesome 4 or 5 inch wide red striped white flowers.
The amaryllis flowers will bloom once or twice a year. The bloom will last about a month. Once the bloom is done, they get trimmed back and will be dormant until next year.
Planting your amaryllis bulbs outdoors is a great way to reuse your amaryllis bulbs after they bloom indoors in the winter. We keep them in their pots, cut off all the foliage, and wait for late spring before moving them outdoors. Feed and water them and you'll probably be rewarded with multiple little bulblets that you can separate and grow up on their own. Just remember to move them back indoors or into a heated greenhouse before the first frost.
Having a variety of perennials in your garden offers varied blooming cycles and fun surprises throughout the seasons.
