Shade-Loving Landscape
Designing a thriving and lush backyard for dear friends and customers
My dearest friends recently purchased and moved into their first home! With that comes endless home improvement projects. When they presented me with their nearly completely shaded backyard and asked what they could possibly plant. I knew I had a challenge ahead of me.
They like fairly low-maintenance landscaping that could be vibrant in color hopefully year round. Their yeard is completely shaded by tree canopy which also results in leaves and volunteer saplings or seedlings. I wanted to share with you the plants I put together for around the tree bases in case you have similar mostly shaded areas that could benefit from color and diverse planting.
Shade-loving plants:
Blue Boy Hosta paired with Purple Heuchera
First Frost Hosta paired with Ruby Tuesday Heuchera
Red Hot Poker Hosta - beautiful lushes light green leaves for contrast.
Kale - great for foliage or food for the veggie lovers!
Purple De Oro Daylily - tolerates shade
Chesapeake Crab Leg Daylilly - it is Maryland, afterall.
Purple Coneflower - planted strategically in areas of only partial shade. Another Maryland essential.
This selection will brighten up the base of any tree or any plant bed in the shade. These plants can be very tolerant of differrent sun or shade conditions. So even if the tree canopy or seasons change, these plants will be happy. Most of these plants are also low-maintenance; making them perfect for beginners and expert gardeners alike.
I hope to share more landscape design adventures with you in the future and as always, contact us if you have any qustions on what plants could thrive in your garden or are in need of companions for your current growth!
